Abstract:
Tribocorrosion, the degradative process between metallic modular junctions, is more commonly seen with larger prosthetic femoral heads, longer neck lengths, and higher-offset stems.
The use of recalled modular femoral stems should raise suspicion for tribocorrosion in patients with hip pain.
Fretting corrosion is the predominant source of failure at modular junctions.
The literature is unclear regarding the clinical utility of measuring serum levels of cobalt and chromium.
