What is knee fusion?
Knee fusion, also called knee arthrodesis, is a salvage surgical procedure connecting the thigh bone (femur) directly to the shin bone (tibia). Since the femur and tibia are fused, the knee joint will no longer bend and will be shortened. This operation is used to avoid amputation in the setting of a periprosthetic joint infection that has failed multiple attempts at eradication. The goal of the surgery is to stabilize the knee and eliminate pain. Dr. Prem Ramkumar, knee fusion surgeon, is located in Long Beach and serves patients in Los Angeles, Orange County, and surrounding Southern California areas.
Who is a candidate for knee fusion?
Dr. Ramkumar may recommend a knee fusion after a failed infected knee replacement or if a revision joint replacement is not feasible. The procedure is also an option if you have a tumor around the joint or have a long-standing joint or blood infection. Unlike knee replacements, a knee fusion is a permanent solution to chronic knee pain, and with proper physical therapy and retraining, you can return to many normal activities.
How is knee fusion performed?
Knee fusion is a major surgery, performed in the hospital, under general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Ramkumar removes the damaged parts of the thigh and shin bones and then fuses them using a metal plate or rod. Sometimes, Dr. Ramkumar uses bone graft to help the healing process. After the surgery, your leg will be placed in a knee immobilizer. You may spend up to two weeks in the hospital or go to a rehabilitation hospital before returning home.
What is the recovery process after a knee fusion?
You may walk on the knee fusion immediately. The loading helps the fusion solidify sooner and speed up healing. It can take up to three months to make a full recovery.
